Ok, this one is well and truly a rant so if you thought my other papers were ranting, wait till you finish this one to tell me how I usually make these. Without further ado, I take you to:
The faults in the movie Sleeping Beauty (an opinion piece…mostly)
First of all I have to say, yes. The purpose of the movie was to show off the amazing Disney animation. And they did that pretty good…except for the faces of the 2 heroes. Briar Rose or Princess Aurora is 15 then has her birthday and turns 16, but she looks like a 23 year old. And Prince Phillip is 4-6 years older than the 16 year old girl. Somehow they made a 16 year old look 23 and a 22 year old look 17. Other than that, I’m pleased with Disney’s animation, however, the one thing they messed up is the faces of the 2 most important people in the film, and that’s something that I cannot ignore.
Now something that will lose me in any movie if it’s bad: the story. If the movie doesn’t have a good story I just don’t want to watch it. And in this movie there is a story unlike Cinderella which should just be renamed Mice, but the story is a miss and I can find a better solution at almost every point:
So as a baby they invited 3 fairies to offer her a gift. Something that I’m guessing Phillip never received as a baby. How come she gets these things and no one else? Then a witch who knows she is evil is upset that she wasn’t invited to the ceremony. So she comes any way and gives a prophecy that she will die from a pin prick at 16 from a spindle of a spinning wheel of all things. After the curse was altered so that she’d only fall asleep, the king has a lot of options to reasonably handle the situation, but no he chooses the nuclear option: burn every spinning wheel, and let Briar Rose leave the kingdom for 16 years. If these fairies were willing to devote their time and protection to the girl anyway they could have done it in the castle where they’d have help from the guard. That’s the entire plot of Aladdin, Jasmine can’t be independent because she’s the princess. There should be the 3 fairies and at least 7 royal guard keeping an eye on her at all time to make sure she isn’t subjected to brain wash. Also when you burn all the spinning wheels in the realm you have to stop and ask why they were there in the first place. If that was their primary way to make clothing then anyone who might want more clothing in a 16 year window wouldn’t be able to get any. This also causes businesses to collapse. Then we learn that they did all that for nothing because Maleficent had her own special spinning wheel that glows. Come to think of it what made the king think that a prophecy given by a magical being would use an ordinary artifact? If I were king I would think of a solution that would be best for the kingdom: cut the princess’s fingers off. Problem solved. And then also make sure she’s being watched at all times just in case. The royal guard would also help her with any task that requires fingers. Then businesses continue, my people have clothes and bad doesn’t get what they want.
